Farewell To The Toyota FJ Cruiser

Toyota FJ Cruiser Ultimate EditionThe last Toyota FJ Cruisers will roll off the assembly line with the conclusion of the 2014 model year. To commemorate the departure of the iconic off-roader, Toyota is building 2,500 “Trail Teams Ultimate Edition” FJs.

Features include the special “Heritage Blue” color that harkens to FJs of yore, TRD suspension, a skid plate, bead-lock wheels, BF Goodrich A/T KO tires, rock sliders and a roof rack.

Toyota has sold more than 200,000 FJ Cruisers since the truck was launched in 2006, though to be honest they have yet to capture the hearts of overlanders the way their predecessors have. But that may come with time– by the time our grandkids are building expedition rigs, classic FJs will either have returned to the Earth or be too valuable to modify.

I could see these “Trail Teams” Cruisers becoming hot commodities on Craigslist and ExpeditionPortal in twenty years. Assuming we still have gasoline then.

I, for one, will miss the FJ. I think they are cool and unique. (Though I admit, I hated the test drive.)
